Pop superstar Charli XCX is stretching her wings as she will have a major role in a film by notable Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike. According to Variety, the singer has a starring role in the new picture and will also be credited as a producer. The name of the project, as well as any details regarding the feature, shall remain unannounced, but it is known that Ross Evans, who wrote How to Save a Marriage, which starred Robert Pattinson, is writing the script. This cooperation represents an intriguing, unconventional union between an innovative director and a pop star commonly perceived as avant-garde.

Miike’s Signature Style Meets Charli’s Bold Persona

Takashi Miike is known around the world for his provocative storytelling and flexibility in filming style. Mostly in line with horror and gore themes with films like Audition (1999) and Ichi the Killer (2001), Miike's list of films far exceeds the grotesque. Miike has directed numerous dramas and action films (e.g. Rainy Dog, Family, Crows Zero), and while his most violent projects are certainly a noteworthy identifier, he is fundamentally distinguished by his bravery related to storytelling, which coincidentally allows Miike to relate somewhat to Charli XCX's courage in preferring artistic direction. Ultimately, his mixed genre ability and trends of disruption in the story may provide Charli an opportunity to act toward her conversion.

Charli XCX’s Rising Presence in Film and Television

This untitled Miike project is simply one of the acting projects that Charli XCX has recently been engaging in. Traveling to the other side of her music career, she has been taking significant strides in film and television. Just last month, Prime Video released a first look at Overcompensating, a comedy series where Charli plays a hyper-dramatized version of herself. In a scene that has become largely viral, she is seen yelling at an assistant who asked her to play "Boom Clap" at a college event, with comedic timing and zesty delivery. In addition, she is the executive music producer on the series which showcases her broadening creative ability behind the camera as well.

A Star-Studded Slate of Future Roles

In addition to Miike’s film and the Prime Video series, Charli’s acting résumé continues to grow at a rapid pace. Last December, she was confirmed to appear in The Gallerist, a drama featuring an impressive cast including Natalie Portman, Jenna Ortega, Sterling K. Brown, Daniel Brühl, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. In comparison to her earlier projects, these new roles offer a diverse range of characters and genres. Charli’s performances, regardless of what medium, keep attracting attention and elevating her profile as a serious performer. She has announced some upcoming titles, including Gregg Araki's I Want Your Sex, the thriller Sacrifice starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Evans, and the film version of the graphic novel 100 Nights of Hero with Emma Corrin and Maika Monroe.
