RAYE has won the 2026 Mercury Prize for This Music May Contain Hope. The result was announced at Newcastle's Utilita Arena on October 22, where she received the trophy from broadcaster Sian Eleri and performed I Hate The Way I Look Today. It is her first Mercury win.

The prize's announcement puts the album's range at the centre of the decision. The judges described four sections moving through jazz, soul, R&B and classical influences. Her record emerged from a 12-album shortlist that also included Olivia Dean, Paul McCartney, JADE and Florence + The Machine.

An album award before another version of the album

The timing places two different milestones next to each other. RAYE is scheduled to present This Symphony May Contain Hope at the Royal Albert Hall on October 23, performing the album with her band, The Heritage Orchestra and Flames Collective. That concert was announced earlier; the Mercury result is the new development.

Our report on the one-night orchestral show explains that separate arrangement. The award recognises the released record. It does not turn tonight's concert into an awards performance, establish its set list beyond the announced programme, or mean footage from Newcastle was filmed in London.

From a nomination to a win

Her debut, My 21st Century Blues, also made the Mercury shortlist in 2023, when Ezra Collective won. The new result adds a winner's trophy to that earlier nomination rather than marking her first appearance in the competition.

The Mercury Prize selects an album by a British or Irish act. That differs from an artist choosing a festival programme, as in FKA twigs' Meltdown appointment. For listeners exploring RAYE's songs, the immediate point of entry is the winning album itself; the orchestral show offers another setting for the same body of work.
