its a metaphor. The artists want to convey a message of hope and optimism. If you were around in 1966-67 you would remember the Vietnam War and the Summer of Love. This song is a lovely response to those times. The young generation then wanted change, a better world, full of peace and love.
What we got was 1968. Remember that? Starting with the Tet Offensive in January, its all downhill.
But this song remains. Maybe it was too delicate, too sweet to be an anthem, but the world could use some peace and love.

Numerous ancient metaphysical or spiritual traditions do predict the "Age of Aquarius" to be a time period when we transit to a time of higher consciousness, revelation, more understanding, harmony, peace and love. So this part of the song is surprisingly accurate. Sounds nice, but Jupiter is the god of lightning, Mars is the god of war, together these don't make peace. Would be better if Venus was used, but it doesn't rhyme with 'stars'. It's only a song...

Age of aquarius is when the sun moves out of the pisces constellation and enters the aquarius constellation in approximately 2150. It takes the sun 2150 earth years to travel thru each constellation.
