He began playing guitar at age 13 in 1996 and studied music technology at Keele University in 2001 to 2005 (along with philosophy). It was here that his tastes for electronic textures developed as he gradually abandoned conventional rock instrumentation and composition for far more abstract (and lengthy) pieces that straddled the sonic spectrum between ambient, hip hop, so-called IDM and post rock.
