We cannot earn forgiveness. "We are saved by grace through faith and that not of ourselves, it is the free gift of God (Jesus). Not of works or a man would have a place to brag". There is no bragging when we stand before God. We have ALL sinned except for God. He forgives us because He loves us. Not because we did something to earn it. All we have to do is ask. Pennance is something a person can "do" after they've sinned that does NOT earn forgiveness. A person has to humbly ask Jesus for forgiveness. Remember pennance and repentance are two different things. Repent simply means turn away from our selfish sins and return to God. Does a person forgive their children because they earned it? No. Because they love them? Yes. If a man can love like that, imagine how much more God loves us. Just ask.

I think it means not to believe fully in religion and to rather believe into yourself and forgive yourself than ask something that isnt real... Penace cant absolve your sins
