JONA LEWIE

- Stop The Cavalry Lyrics

Songwriters: Lewie, Jona;

Hey, Mr. Churchill comes over here
To say we're doing splendidly
But it's very cold out here in the snow
Marching to and from the enemy
Oh, I say it's tough, I have had enough
Can you stop the Cavalry?

I have had to fight, almost every night
Down throughout these centuries
That is when I say, oh yes, yet again
Can you stop the Cavalry?

Mary Bradley waits at home
In the nuclear fall-out zone
Wish I could be dancing now
In the arms of the girl I love

Dub a dub a dum dum
Dub a dub a dum
Dub a dum dum dub a dum
Dub a dub a dum

Dub a dub a dum dum
Dub a dub a dum
Dub a dum dum dub a dum
Dub a dub a dum

Wish I was at home for Christmas
Bang, that's another bomb on another town
While Hussar and Jim have tea
If I get home, live to tell the tale
I'll run for all presidencies
If I get elected I'll stop, I will stop the Cavalry

Dub a dub a dum dum
Dub a dub a dum
Dub a dum dum dub a dum
Dub a dub a dum

Dub a dub a dum dum
Dub a dub a dum
Dub a dum dum dub a dum
Dub a dub a dum

Wish I was at home for Christmas
Wish I could be dancing now
In the arms of the girl I love
Mary Bradley waits at home
She's been waiting two years long
Wish I was at home for Christmas

What is the meaning behind Stop The Cavalry lyrics?

When we interpret the meaning being expressed, Jona Lewie’s 'Stop the Cavalry' depicts a soldier’s desire for peace and home during the war, through his wish to celebrate Christmas with his family instead of being on the battleground. The lyrics mainly show the soldier's longing for home while war and conflict are annotated as the reasons of political disillusionment and opposite feelings. The highly nostalgic theme of the song pictures love, social commentary, angst and despair. While the situation during wartime is not glorified, Christmas still is perceived as the most hopeful and uniting time for humanity amidst all chaos and destruction. Thus, ‘Stop the Cavalry’ lyrics, though not directly depicting war events and impacts of the war, still contain the very critical issues of war and longing for home which are probably not appropriate for very young children. Allusions to violence and the consequences of war are present, yet they remain non-graphic and non-explicit. Hence, the general atmosphere indicates the necessity of parental guidance.

A beautiful song about how we should try everything in our might to stop wars. That would be a better world indeed.

In the NW it is a Christmas song. With 20 years active duty as a Marine I can fully appreciate it as simply a human emotional statement of wishing to be home. No need for me to view it as a protest.

This is awesome song, so festive and not cheesy like so many other songs at this time of the year are, I also think it has a great link with our troops over seas now, and hope that all of them can come home safe for Christmas :)
