JETHRO TULL

- Locomotive Breath Lyrics

In the shuffling madness
Of the locomotive breath
Runs the all time loser
Headlong to his death

Oh, he feels the piston scraping
Steam breaking on his brow

Old Charlie stole the handle
And the train, it won't stop going
No way to slow down
Oh, oh

He sees his children jumping off
At stations one by one
His woman and his best friend
In bed an' having fun

Oh, he's crawling down the corridor
On his hands and knees

Old Charlie stole the handle
And the train, it won't stop going
No way to slow down
Yeah, yeah

He hears the silence howling
And catches angels as they fall
And the all time winner
Has got him by the balls

Oh, he picks up Gideon's Bible
Open at page one

I thank God, he stole the handle
And the train, it won't stop going
No way to slow down

No way to slow down
No way to slow down
No way to slow down
No way to slow down
No way to slow down

What is the meaning behind Locomotive Breath lyrics?

When we take a closer look to the meaning, Jethro Tull's 'Locomotive Breath' is a song that shows a man through the use of a metaphorical picture. He is on a hectic and never-ending trip which is represented by a speeding train that he cannot control. The train is the unstoppable flow of life and the man is left to feel the overwhelming sense of loss of power and sameness of his situation. He is thinking about time's ephemeral nature and the difficulties of staying on the same pace as life. The lyrics of the song 'locomotive breath' mainly highlight despair, angst, reflection, heartbreak, and solitude. They also hint at the futility of fate, loss, and regret and struggle and desperation. The lyrics touch upon themes of loss and the fight with existence along with situations of grown-ups like adultery. Although such themes may not cater to small kids, they are nevertheless not so strong or explicit to get a higher rating.

The whole runaway train reference is metaphoric. The mans life is falling apart ... kids bailing ... infidelity ... he is positive he can't get control and will crash.

'Though it could slow down' doesn't even make sense. The handle is what slows (and stops) a train, and it's been stolen, hence 'no way to slow down,' which is clearly enunciated in the last lines.

Just to clarify. The lyrics above are absolutely correct. I'm listening now on quality headphones. Proper Audio Technica NOT ipod earbuds. The lyrics are spot on.

In the last verse of Locomotive Breath, Anderson does not thank god for anything. He simply sings: god stole the handle, and the train...

Additional corrections: 3rd line from bottom - THANK God HE stole the handle and the train IT won't stop going...

Mistakes above. Lyrics are: PISTONS scraping (plural); he sees his children JUMP off; and he hears the SIRENS howling. Discernible in the original, and clear in live versions.
