here is a heart. here is a heart
i made it for you, so take it
battered and braised
grilled and sautéed
just how you like it, like it
you know i live to fill you up
blood of my blood,
dripping with love
i bring you a thing
you need most
silent between
supplies and machines
i hang in the corners like a ghost
you know i live to be seen through
no better way that i can see
to spend all the time
while you're asleep
when holding your hands
inside of mine, mmmm
i wanna be here and nowhere else
rationing off bits of myself
so i can crumble at your side
sleep like the dead
through the noise in your head
while monitors click
and whirr and glow
i'm with you all day
and i still would stay
tomorrow and onward
just this close
you know i live to keep you safe, oh
no better way that i can see
to spend all the time
while you're asleep
when holding your hands
inside of mine
i wanna be here and nowhere else
rationing off bits of myself
so i can crumble at your side
i can't explain it
but i have to try
if you evaporate
the seas will rise
'til they devour the sky
here is a heart. here is a heart
i made it for you, so take it
battered and braised
grilled and sautéed
just how you like it, like it
no better way that i can see
to spend all the time
while you're asleep
when holding your hands
inside of mine
i wanna be here and nowhere else
rationing off bits of myself
so i can crumble at your side

What is the meaning behind Here Is A Heart lyrics?
When we focus on what the lyrics are trying to say, in her song "Here is a Heart," Jenny Owen Youngs presents a very moving and powerful portrayal of a love that is unconditional and absolute. Through the metaphor of the heart as a gift, the singer conveys the intensity of emotional commitment and the degree of sacrifice that love entails. The presentation of the heart as being 'battered and braised, grilled and sautéed' is very graphic and it depicts the extremes to which a person will go to render comfort and support. The presentation of such a love is very vivid and it is in the relationship where the love, the presence, and the care of one are heard and felt even in the quietest and the most vulnerable moments. The lyrics of Here is a heart are very much centered around love, reflection, joy, peace, and hope. However, the song also points out reliance on hard love, self-denial, and protection and care as main aspects of the story. The lyrics have some mature topics and images that might be quite beyond young children's comprehension. The words are not very explicit but at the same time the themes of love, sacrifice, and protection are depicted as quite intense. Parents might want to check the content first before allowing their small kids to listen. ✔️

This is a song about being with someone who is emotionally unavailable--only there for affection when he/she's unconscious--but still serving them constantly, as well as you can. It's a song about your entire life being consumed by someone else, to the extent that you stop moving forward, stop getting stronger or smarter, just get stuck in a holding pattern--even though they don't give you anything in return.

I think this song is either about her loved one being in a coma -
"Silent between supplies and machines", "Sleep like the dead through the noise in your head/While monitors click and whirr and glow", "No better way that I can see to spend all the time/While you're asleep"
- OR about the person possibly needing a heart transplant, hence the mention of the heart, though I'm not sure why it's being presented as a meal..
In reality, it's a very sad song.
