GREEN DAY

- Basket Case Lyrics

Do you have the time to listen to me whine
About nothing and everything all at once?
I am one of those melodramatic fools
Neurotic to the bone, no doubt about it

Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up, I think I'm cracking up
Am I just paranoid? Am I just stoned?

I went to a shrink to analyze my dreams
She says it's lack of sex that's bringing me down
I went to a whore, he said my life's a bore
So quit my whining 'cause it's bringing her down
Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up, I think I'm cracking up
Am I just paranoid? Am I just stoned?

Grasping to control
So I better hold on

Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up, I think I'm cracking up
Am I just paranoid? Am I just stoned?

What is the meaning behind Basket Case lyrics?

When we try to interpret the meaning, the Green Day song titled 'Basket Case' is about the feelings of being totally overwhelmed and anxious to the point of doubting one's sanity and even questioning the reality around him. The words tell a story of the presence of paranoia and that confusion itself, where the latter is possibly a result of the former and vice versa, with the metaphor of feeling like a 'basket case' being used to illustrate this situation. The lyrics of `Basket case` basically put forward different aspects like- angst, reflection, despair, solitude, and social commentary. On the other hand, the song also highlights the necessity of the process of self-reflection, mental health, and anxiety and paranoia. The lyrics actually portray the mental health problems and at the same time refer to adult situations where one is 'abandoned sexually and has to visit a sex worker' is one of the references. The presence of such elements in the song makes it unsuitable for children below the age of thirteen, thus it gets the PG-13 rating.

When my daughters were teens they listened to this over and over, so I memorized the words. In karaoke I now, at age 64, do a rap version (can't sing) and everyone loves it. Thanks.
