DECEMBERISTS

- Down By The Water Lyrics

See this ancient river bed
See where all my follies led
Down by the water and down by the old main drag

I was just some tow-head teen
Feeling 'round for fingers to get in between
Down by the water and down by the old main drag

(chorus)
The season rubs me wrong
The summer swells anon
So knock me down, tear me up
But I would bear it all broken just to fill my cup
Down by the water and down by the old main drag

Sweet descend this rabble 'round
The pretty little patter of a seaboard town
Rolling in the water and rolling down the old main drag

All dolled up in gabardine
The lash-flashing Leda of pier nineteen
Queen of the water and queen of the old main drag

(chorus)
The season rubs me wrong
The summer swells anon
So knock me down, tear me up
But I would bear it all broken just to fill my cup
Down by the water and down by the old main drag

(chorus)
The season rubs me wrong
The summer swells anon
So knock me down, tear me up
But I would bear it all broken just to fill my cup
Down by the water and down by the old main drag

Down by the water and down by the old main drag
Down by the water and down by the old main drag

Its about getting caught up with a wonderful girl in the middle of nature. Things are great and amazing and then challenges hit and they are beat down. But it is worth it for satisfaction.

Pretty sure this song is about impregnating a prostitute down by the old abandoned part of town. Old main drag suggests it is no longer the main part of town. And he talks of swelling and knock me up.

Old main drag: Willamette River in Portland (not quite a seaboard down, but a port), used to be flanked by a freeway later knocked down when they build the interstate.

No, dude-duh, it is 'lash-flashing'... she's batting her eyelashes and looking alluring. 'Leda' is out of Greek myth, a beautiful queen that got seduced by Zeus (appearing as a swan).

Peter Buck from R.E.M. is a guest guitarist on this one, which explains the similarity. I adore this song, have to turn it up and sing along.

Love this so much...esp. the REM-esque jangly guitars and harmonies. BTW, it's tow-head, not toe-head..(it means having blondish hair..)
