My own personal interpretation is one about religion (of course). In my opinion, what is being said is that there are many people in our lives and not all of them might share your religion (the singer is Christian) and so in this particular religion, it is believed that those who do not have faith in Jesus Christ will go to hell, not heaven. The singer is questioning this belief. He believes that God is a merciful, wonderful being, and that all of God's children should be included in his love (they are included, but the afterlife is just for those who believe). He thinks that everyone should be able to experience God's mercy and kindness - he does not sit by while his children are harmed. So, in short, if not all the people that are children of God are not counted in the afterlife, then he does not wish to be included because it is not fair to him.

I think this song is about people in general being treated differently, knowing that there is hope in even the most hopeless situations. And I think he's saying, if it kills him, he will stand up for those that believe. That believe in a better tomorrow. And if it really kills him, he's not afraid to go to "the depths" because he knows that he's done it for a great cause. In short "if they need a martyr, he'll be one".
