Keith Stewart was a calypso artist in the Carribean who released two albums in the 1960's, Yellow Bird and Jamaica Calling. He was popular in his homeland, mostly performing traditional songs, but never acheived much success in the United States. Nothing from either of his only two albums has ever been released on CD.Calypso originally evolved as a form of subversive communication among slaves during the 19th century colonial oppression of the Caribbean islands. Banned from speaking while working, the islanders began to pass along news and commiserate through a sung patois that became the basis for calypso when it emerged as a genre of music in the early 20th century.
