SIMON & GARFUNKEL

- Scarborough Fair, Canticle Lyrics

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
(On the side of a hill in the deep forest green)
Parsely, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Tracing a sparrow on snow-crested ground)
Without no seams nor needlework
(Blankets and bedclothes a child of the mountains)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
(Sleeps unaware of the clarion call)

Tell her to find me an acre of land
(On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves)
Parsely, sage, rosemary, and thyme
(Washed is the ground with so many tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strand
(A soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather
(War bellows, blazing in scarlet battalions)
Parsely, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Generals order their soldiers to kill)
And to gather it all in a bunch of heather
(And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten)
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

What is the meaning behind Scarborough Fair, Canticle lyrics?

When we interpret the meaning being expressed, the track 'Scarborough Fair / Canticle' of Simon & Garfunkel narrates a series of impossible tasks assigned by a former partner to the one still in love, meaning the longing and the impossibility of resurrecting a dead romance. The flowers cited symbolize purity and healing, through which they are contrasted with the war and thus reflect the emotional warfare and separation of the singer from the lost love. The whole of Scarborough fair, canticle lyrics mostly highlight lovesick, nostalgia, heartbreak, angst, and introspection. Besides, the song itself is a historian of the lost love, nostalgia, and war and conflict forces. The lyrics carry some adult senses in the form of love and war that might not be suitable for very young kids. And even though there isn't any offensive language or graphic content, the war and death imagery imply that parental guidance might be needed.

This is so much more than I ever understood when I knew this song as a child from mom's 8-tracks. I almost feel I am the soldier thinking of simpler times while mechanically fighting the war. Sad.
