NIK KERSHAW

The Riddle Lyrics

I got two strong arms
Blessings of Babylon
With time to carry on and try
For sins and false alarms
So to America the brave
Wise men save

Near a tree by a river
There's a hole in the ground
Where an old man of Aran
Goes around and around
And his mind is a beacon
In the veil of the night
For a strange kind of fashion
There's a wrong and a right
But he'll never, never fight over you

I got plans for us
Nights in the scullery
And days instead of me
I only know what to discuss
Oh, for anything but light
Wise men fighting over you

It's not me you see
Pieces of valentine
With just a song of mine
To keep from burning history
Seasons of gasoline and gold
Wise men fold

Near a tree by a river
There's a hole in the ground
Where an old man of Aran
Goes around and around
And his mind is a beacon
In the veil of the night
For a strange kind of fashion
There's a wrong and a right
But he'll never, never fight over you

I got time to kill
Sly looks in corridors
Without a plan of yours
A blackbird sings on bluebird hill
Thanks to the calling of the wild
Wise men's child

Near a tree by a river
There's a hole in the ground
Where an old man of Aran
Goes around and around
And his mind is a beacon
In the veil of the night
For a strange kind of fashion
There's a wrong and a right
But he'll never, never fight over you

Near a tree by a river
There's a hole in the ground
Where an old man of Aran
Goes around and around
And his mind is a beacon
In the veil of the night
For a strange kind of fashion
There's a wrong and a right
But he'll never, never fight over you

But he'll never, never fight over you

It might seem to have some kind of fantasy reference, like mythical/historical fiction context. Certainly the mention of Babylon makes it render in the mind a suggestion of that. The words to it sound quite mystical that delivers a kind of magic feel to it.

Wise men... But he'll never never fight over you. It's about his mental dialogue of getting over a girl. All men will understand this on some level or another, and we can also see why he never admitted this. If Nick was to explain the lyrics, it would be like showing his arse to the world.
If she wanted something else, the good luck to her, he will never never fight over you!

I read, that the lyrics were actually created as a placeholder, because they couldn't write lyrics good enough in time. They fit prefectly, but they have no real meaning. Although my source is not the most reliable of all, this still might be true.

they hve no meaning , even nick kershaw said that, they're guide vocals thrown together, though they do sound like a riddle.......

The talk about Babylon, sin, right and wrong, wise men, gives it a biblical meaning! A river flowed under the walls and through the city of Babylon, which Cyrus dammed up and he sent his armies through the hole to gain easy access to the city of Babylon. Hope this helps!

Had no idea what the lyrics were until now, very deep. Used to think the 2nd chorus ended with (...and you'll never ever find the riddle). Very much doubt it was about the Gulf War, no one can predict that far into the future. The video clip itself was a riddle... and I'm still left wondering.

I believe there is no meaning in this song. Maybe Nik wanted to say something about himself. The best solution is that everybody should understand the song to his own liking.

There is no meaning, but the song+video in of itself is very inspirational as far as getting one to think outside of the box, and to immerse oneself in the problem.

this song was released in 1984 which was way before any trouble in the middle east so this did not refer to Iraq (but I can understand why you might think that) but this song is not that deep.

The song may be meaningless, but it is really interesting to know how people think, kudos to Mike Daniels and MacLeod. That is a good thought for a seemingly random lyrics.
