JOHNNY CASH

- Hurt Lyrics

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

What is the meaning behind Hurt lyrics?

When we focus on what the lyrics are trying to say, in 'Hurt,' the now-iconic rendition by Johnny Cash, the lyrics portray an extensive and profound emotional landscape comprising mainly of repentance, sorrow, and the spiraling down of the individual. The musician brings to light the after-effects of his behavior, the solitude that ensues, and his lack of freedom from the torment he has inflicted upon himself over and over. The line 'empire of dirt' is a metaphor for the decaying of one's success and social life as a result of one's own shortcomings, thus accentuating the motif of repentance and the impossibility of reversing former errors. The lyrics of Hurt mainly concentrate on heartbreak, despair, angst, reflection, and nostalgia. Simultaneously, the piece underlines the necessity of pain and suffering, loss and remorse, and self-examination and identity. The words imply self-injury, agony, and addiction, which are deemed adult topics. All the drug use and emotional disturbance that the lyrics mention lead to the conclusion that the content is inappropriate for minors and thus a rating denoting restricted access is justified.

Haha so much talk and controversy over nothing. I do think it is silly that this song is listed under Johnny Cash's name, and I do think NIN's original is far superior. But you all searching for deep meaning in this song is funny. If you have ever known a Heroin addict closely or are one yourself, then maybe you can really understand what Trent is saying here. Otherwise you are probably just putting your own stamp on the song. Every inch of the song is about how a Heroin addict would do anything for a fix, including hurt and betray everyone they ever loved. It is also about how sad that existence is, but mostly I feel it's about the people you hurt on your way to that next hit of good old smack.

Trent wrote the song, and commented on Cash's cover saying that Cash truly made the song his own. Trent literally says the song is not his own anymore, and I imagine that anytime he even thinks about this song, he thinks of Cash's version over his own.

Actually the song was written by Trent in 1995 and Cash covered it in 2002. Personally the NIN version was terrible. Cash did it so well it should be his own. Sevendust did a pretty awesome cover as well.

Yes this song may have been wrote by other groups yes he may have wanted to have a new slate and get away from here. But I believe that he put his feelings into this song lets just think here There may be much more behind the lyrics of the song. But others have their own meaning.I think he did better.

Why are you people talking about what Cash was writing about? For the millionth time, Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails wrote this song. Cash did a great cover, but Reznor deserves credit.

To me the song is actually about regret - If you take the song in its entirety I would say its about a woman who left and he turned to drugs to cope with the loss

he's talking about felling so much pain everyday that he turns to drugs to end the pain then he looses himself and just wants his life back without pain and addiction
