This song is about like no matter what you are going through doesn't mean that you have to put yourself down because of it. I mean if you look at the video it shows a boy getting abused by his father, a man in the army risking his life for a friend and our country, an anorexic man, and a girl who lost somebody close to her. Also the song says "When you feel my heat look into my eyes, it's where my demons hide." so it's like on the surface to might be happy and laughing and smiling and stuff but inside you know that you are sad and if you look into that persons eyes it's like you can see all of their troubles and problems that they are dealing with.

The meaning of this song can easily be heard from the lyrics 'look into my eyes, it's where my demons hide'. Somebody may seem simple and happy and warm and outgoing, but their truth and their past is in their eyes; they won't want to get close to you as they don't want to reveal their struggles and pain that are on the inside.
Another meaning to this song is not to judge someone by how they look or act, because you don't know their story and things that have happened in their lives.
So these things and their history are their 'demons'.

"when the days are cold" - things are dark and depressing
"the cards all fold" - everyone has given up
"the saints we see are all made of gold" - there isn't anyone truly good left
"when your dreams all fail" - life is getting hard and things aren't happening for people
"and the ones we hail are the worst of all" - the people who have the most influence are the people are are the worst influences (famous musicians, etc.)
"the bloods fun stale" - nobody has passion anymore
"I wanna hide the truth, I wanna shelter you" - he wants to hide the terrible world from someone he loves
"but with the beast inside, there's nowhere we can hide" - the things that make man fallen are inside of him, so he could cut her off completely from bad people and she would still have a beast inside her
"no matter what we breed, we still are made of greed" - same idea...man's fallen traits are engrained in him, and you can't make them go away
"this is my kingdom come" - this is my reality, i realize that now, and this is as good as it's getting
"when you feel my heat look into my eyes, it's where my demons hide" - I may seem like a better person on the outside, but in reality I'm just as bad as everyone else on the inside, I've got problems too
"don't get too close, it's dark inside" - you're too innocent for me
"when the curtain call is the last of all" - the show's over, now you see who the people really are, but they've still got smiles on their faces
"when the lights fade out all the sinners crawl" - but when your not looking anymore, the people are just humble sinners on their hands and knees just like everyone else
"so they dug your grave" - everyone is just waiting for you to fall too, because they know you will
"and the masquerade" - like I said before, everyone is just a fake
"will come calling out at the mess you made" - even though they're just fakes, they are just looking for their chance to criticize you and pull you down, which s why they've dug your grave
'don't wanna let you down, but I am hell-bound" - I really don't want to hurt you, but even though I know you trust in my, I'm gonna have to burst your bubble cuz I'm as bad as everyone else
"don't wanna hide the truth, know this is all for you" - he wanted to hide he truth earlier, but now he knows he can't keep deluding her, she needs to know who he really is, who people all really are, and it may hurt her but it's all for her in the end
"they say it's what you make, I say it's up to fate" - some people say that what you do and how hard you work determines the outcome of life our a relationship, but he thinks it't just gonna happen like it happens and there's nothing he can do to change it: people will always have demons inside them
"it's woven in my soul" - his demons are a part of him, he's never going to shake them
"I need to let you go" - she's innocent, and he doesn't want to ruin that and since he's stuck with his demons forever, he needs to separate himself from her
"your eyes they shine so bright, I want to save that light" - again, he wants to preserve her innocence
"I can't escape this now" - again, he thinks he's stuck with his demons forever
"unless you show me how" - here's the note of hope in this song. He thinks he's pretty much stuck like he is forever, but whoever he is talking to is so innocent and 'her eyes shine so bright' that he thinks just maybe possibly she might be able to show him the way out

It's funny how everyone relates the song to what they are going through. I believe it's talking about how when everything that we assume and hold to be true falls apart to reveal that at the heart of everything greed rules, that the only thing that is truly true and "gold" is what we find in death which is the angels in Heaven the only pure people.
I believe the song tries to highlight the fact that there are innocent people that are lost to greed and that no matter how hard we try to protect the innocent, greed is inherently inside everyone so eventually it bursts out binding us to hell. Shown by the end where he says "eyes so bright".
I also think that the protector is like a fallen person as he exclaims don't come to close but he wants to protect her but must distance himself in order not to spread the greed/beast.

I would love to hear what the song writers were thinking!! The song always brings tears to my eyes... Not sure why! Could be some of the lyrics but the WAY it is delivered by the singers is gut wrenching!!

the meaning of this song (great song) is that you might have a secret (demons) that could hurt someone so don't risk getting too close. i may seem OK on the outside but i'm hurt inside and my secret lays in my eyes. enjoy the song!

I agree with Mathew when you look for some deeper meaning than what it is things get to confusing. Everyone has demons they want to hide, life makes us all that way, it just is. So we hide them away but their obviously still there in our eyes no matter what we do or say. I identify with the song myself, perhaps that's why I like it so much. No real hidden messages here for me it Just Is.

Everyone has a dark side no matter what, that is why it is very easy to relate to
this song. It is to remind us that we can never be perfect, we all have flaws within
us. The video shows the simple emotional pain of being human, which also
contributes to the dark attributes of a person, and if it is not showing, it is hiding/
waiting inside that person.

This song has multiple double meanings, but the two main themes have a central core: corruption. The first and most obvious first impression is that this is about someone with serious problems that are the result of their own corruption. The second interpretation is that this song really wants to be the theme song of a show or movie about vampires. Either way though, it's about corruption, thus the themes about wanting to tell vs hiding the truth, playing roles and pretending to be what one is not, having serious critics, and being concerned about not dragging someone else they really care about into the trouble. Regardless of one's religious affiliation (multiple Catholic references, such as saints), the song has meaning because the spiritual crisis described could just as easily be about morale as more esoteric concepts.
