DEMONS & WIZARDS

- Fiddler On The Green Lyrics

Sad voices they're calling
Our precious girl she can't be gone
How bitter this morning
When daddy's darling
Went out and started her day

Wasn't there a dream last night
Like a spring never ending
Still the water runs clear
Through my mind
On the field I can see a fiddler
The fiddler on the green and the sad boy
I took him too early
Would you mind
Would you mind
Would you mind
If I take you

To be with you
To be with you
To be with you
To be with you

The sun seemed bright
The air was clear
The air was clear
A trick of light
Turned red into green
She saw the light
Her face was pale
Her body smashed
Her beauty's gone

Isn't it a shame
The reaper said
He is quite alone here
And still waiting for you
Oh I really did fail for the first time
Spoke the fiddler, poor old fiddler
The fiddler on the green
The fiddler on the green
It would be nice…

Take my hand

Just hold my hand
I'll take you there
Your pain will go away

When we search for the deeper meaning hidden within the lines, Demons & Wizards' Fiddler On the Green dives into the themes of sorrow and the transitory nature of existence, employing the metaphor of a fiddler to delineate the flow of time and the omnipresence of death. The lyrics of Fiddler on the green convey primarily heartbreak, despair, angst, reflection, and solitude. The song on the other hand, simultaneously indicates the significance of loss and mourning, longing and yearning, and embracing of destiny. The lyrics of the song consist of the motifs of death and loss, which might be upsetting for the little ones. Moreover, the song includes allusions to a 'smashed' body and a 'reaper', which could be regarded as too strong for kids under the age of 13. "I just wrote that music [for "Fiddler on the Green"] and sent it over to Hansi. The whole concept is his and it's based on a true story", Jon elaborates. "[Hansi] was out walking his dog and he saw a little boy get killed on a bicycle -- hit by a car. Well, it happened again, like a week later -- same spot, same place in his neighborhood in a place where something like that would never happen. Over in Germany, the Fiddler is like what we call the Reaper." Sounds like the Demons & Wizards album cover, wouldn't you agree? In summary, the Fiddler makes a mistake and takes this little boy's life too soon. Thusly, he promised the boy he'll create this paradise for him. The girl in this scenario would have been this little boy's future wife, so the deal is that the Fiddle makes a heaven for this pair as part of the bargain. In case you were wondering, this is Jon Schaffer's favorite track.
