STING

- Russians Lyrics

In Europe and America, there's a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets
Mr. Khrushchev said we will bury you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
It would be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russians love their children too

How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer's deadly toy
There is no monopoly in common sense
On either side of the political fence
We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

There is no historical precedent
To put the words in the mouth of the President
There's no such thing as a winnable war
It's a lie that we don't believe anymore
Mr. Reagan says we will protect you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
What might save us, me, and you
Is that the Russians love their children too

What is the meaning behind Russians lyrics?

When we explore how the lyrics were meant to make us feel, the 'Russians' song by Sting is about the fear and tension of the Cold War era, and he even goes as far as to say that the world would be a better place if all the different ideologies and governments were to coexist. Sting is sincerely perplexed about the possible outcome if nuclear bombs were to be used and the world comes to an end. However, he also looks at it from a positive side and points out the global need for peace. He even goes a step further to say that all parents around the world, including the ones in Russia, wish for absolutely nothing but a safe world for their children. The lyrics of Russians depict social commentary, love, hope, reflection, and angst mostly. The song is not only about nuclear threat and war but also about human beings; it uses political rhetoric and skepticism. The lyrics herald a combined world of political tension and war that may not be very appropriate for young children without the supervision of their parents. Yet, there is no language, violence, or adult material that would make it necessary to elevate its rating.

It's December 2018. This song has a great deal of meaning to me right now. I'm 72 years old. I have revisited many of Stings songs in the last few years. He is a true artist.

Believe, Russians do Love their children)I have the right to say so, as I am a Russian. And I fully agree with the lyrics. There is still a belief, that all the russians are communist lunatics...Lies.

My favourite lyrics. I think the negative comments of people who probably think this song is accusing them or their ideology are very foolish since this song is, I quote, Regardless of ideology!

When he says: Believe me... I hope the Russians love their children too... it's about the communist ideology and the mindset that the evolution of humankind is and can be achieved fast by communism!

I'm old enough to remember the Cold War and that is what this song is about. The names Reagan and Krushchev are a dead give-away. This song is intelligent in a very beautiful way. Thank you Sting.

As far as I understand this song doesn't preach for racism. It's criticizing nationalism and saying that we should not beat ourselves over a skin color, language or religion... we are all human being.

I wouldn't say, this is racist, it is against both sides, and I think the most important Line describes intelligently a very strange felling of threat, which we simply can't understand today anymore
