Freewill Lyrics

There are those who think
That life has nothing left to chance
A host of holy horrors
To direct our aimless dance

A planet of playthings
We dance on the strings of powers we cannot perceive
The stars aren't aligned or the gods are malign
Blame is better to give than receive

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear, I will choose freewill

There are those who think
That they were dealt a losing hand
The cards were stacked against them
They weren't born in Lotus Land

All preordained, a prisoner in chains
A victim of venomous fate
Kicked in the face, you can pray for a place
In heaven's unearthly estate

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear, I will choose freewill

Each of us, a cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete
Genetic blends with uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that's far too fleet

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear, I will choose freewill

Not an athiest anthem. They are jewish. It means you can either follow people by being afraid of the past or other things. Or the other choice is following people and just being too noce for your own good and he would rather choose freewill becuase the other people are choosing one of the other

I theink the song means you have one life and you have to make a choice if you want to spend it having fun or not. If you choose to have fun than dont have to much fun that you do bad or be punished.

Add to the Atheist Anthem discussion the obvious nod to Ayn Rand in quite a bit of early Rush, and this idea becomes even more plausible. Rush has leaned away from Ayn Rand in recent times, tho.

Too bad there is no free will. People don't make themselves out of nothing. Trace your desires back to their sources. Eventually you end up at something beyond your control.

Umm If an Athiest declares this his anthem, then it is indeed an athiest anthem. Listened to with athiest bias, yes it is one of if not THE best athiest anthems ever!

I like what each of you said. Life is choice. It does not matter if you believe in god or not, we face life and choices.

I have to agree. The song merely is expressing that even if Man does not choose, choices are still made. Call it destiny or fate, whatever. For religious folks, Man was given choice. Freewill...)

Jo, I believe there is a force that is present in the universe. I couldn't possibly explain what that force is. If it is God, okay, let's call it God. This song merely says we are free to choose.peace

@Jo Jerome: this song isnt an 'athiest anthem'. its about while Man is able to evade choosing, they still make a choice by not choosing
