Do They Know It's Christmas Lyrics

It's Christmas time, there's no need to be afraid
At Christmas time, we let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of plenty we can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world at Christmas time

But say a prayer, pray for the other ones
At Christmas time it's hard, but when you're having fun
There's a world outside your window
And it's a world of dread and fear

Where the only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that ring there are the clanging
Chimes of doom
Well, tonight, thank God it's them instead of you

And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time
The greatest gift they'll get this year is life
Where nothing ever grows, no rain nor rivers flow
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

(Here's to you)
Raise a glass for everyone
(Here's to them)
Underneath that burning sun
Do they know it's Christmastime at all?

Feed the world, feed the world
Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again
Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again

Feed the world, feed the world
Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again
Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again

This song is about trying to see that there is another side to the world, and that people do live in poverty. We are all very lucky to be born in a place where we have everything, yet some people are born with nothing. It's not their fault. This song tries to get us to do something about this. One person alone can't change the world, but together we can.

does this song really care for the dying and starving people of the world as an ultimate act of unselfish love for the others and not for ones self?

To jay, this song was meant for people in Ethiopia it is a part in africa. There was a huge drought where millions of people died. So bob geldof decided to make a song especially for these people

Why the reference to Africa? We also have people who can't feed in Europe and America, Asia as well. I think the song would have been nice without reference to Africa.
