Clarinettist Monty Sunshine was one of the leading figures in the British "trad" boom of the late 1950s and 1960s, most frequently associated with the Chris Barber Band. His main influences were Johnny Dodds and George Lewis. His top ten hit was a version of Bechet's Petite Fleur and this was followed up by another Bechet tune, Si Tu Vois Ma Mère. Another solo record was the haunting klezmer-influenced tune Hushabye, After Barber Sunshine set up his own band, achieving more success in Germany than in his native UK where "trad" as a popular music lost out first to the blues and then Beatles.
