DON MCLEAN

Vincent Lyrics

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul

Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land

Now, I understand, what you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue

Colors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand

Now, I understand, what you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
On that starry, starry night

You took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you, Vincent
This world was never meant for one
As beautiful as you

Starry, starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frame less heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget

Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now, I think I know what you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will

As an Artist, I loved Van Gogh's paintings since the first time I saw them at age 13. When I first heard this song, I was still in High School.
It's the only song by Don McLean that I even like; I love it. It's the only song that makes me tear up... Cannot think or see anything about suicide, Vincent or depression without this song being a mental soundtrack to the experience! I hardly need an iPod because some songs just play on their own in my head. The word "bitter-sweet" comes to mind. It's as if his paintings almost justify a sad lonely life; at least that's what this song means to me.
Definitely, this is anything but a feel good song. The paintings though are way more uplifting. In a way, I kind of wish this song was never written!

This song's beautiful. All tortured artists and their genius are. Vincent Van Gogh was a starving artist, as was Harry Nilsson.

This is my favorite song of all.The lyrics and arrangement are simply beautiful-not overdone or over-produced.

One of the most beautiful songs. Lyrics and music are very nice and the way Don Mclean sang it- just amazing.

One night, years ago, I awoke to hear this on AM radio. It was a dream that swirled like Vincent's pigments. I've never forgotton the experience.
